Pool leak guide

Why does my pool keep losing salt and chemicals?

Salt and stabilizer do not evaporate. When water evaporates, they stay in the pool. If your service tech keeps adding salt or stabilizer, water is physically leaving the pool, and a leak is one of the most common reasons.

Normal reasons salt goes down

  • Heavy rain that overflows the pool and dilutes it
  • Backwashing or draining water
  • Lots of splash-out from swimmers

If none of these explain it, look for a leak.

Why chlorine is different

Chlorine is used up by sunlight and contaminants every day, so needing chlorine is normal. Salt and stabilizer are the better signs of water loss.

How to check for a leak

Do a bucket test. If the pool drops more than the bucket over 24 hours, you have a leak. Losing more than 1/4 inch a day is another sign.

What a leak detection finds

We plumbing test every line and dye test the skimmers, lights, returns, drains and shell to pinpoint where the water goes. Your service tech can stop chasing chemicals once the leak is repaired.
