Plumbing ruled out
Both the suction side and the return side passed their plumbing tests, so the leak was in the pool itself.
A hole in the step grout
During the dye test, the dye pulled into a hole in the grout line between two cap tiles on the steps. A pick went all the way in, and there is a very large void under the steps. The cap tiles need to come off so the area under them can be repaired.
A lot of old epoxy
We also found old epoxy in the main drain, around the light niche and in its conduit, around a return fitting and on the steps. Epoxy tells us these spots leaked before. It is a temporary patch, not a permanent repair, so we listed proper repairs on the quote. The pool will keep losing water until the steps are fixed.
