Skimmer throat leak detection in Rotonda West

The plumbing in this Rotonda West pool passed every test. The leak was in the skimmer throat, and the dye test turned up several old epoxy patches that were warning signs.

The plumbing test

Both the suction side and the return side of the plumbing passed, so the leak was not underground.

The leak in the skimmer

The dye test found water leaking at the skimmer throat. This is the original fiberglass skimmer, and at its age it can't be repaired from the front. We recommended a new skimmer with a rebuilt throat.

An epoxied main drain with the wrong cover

The main drain had been heavily epoxied, and a skimmer lid was being used as its cover. A drain cover is a safety part, so we recommended resealing the drain and installing a proper cover while the repairs are done.

Other old patches

One return was also heavily epoxied and should be resealed. Epoxy tells us an area has leaked before, and it is only a temporary fix. See why epoxy is not a permanent fix.

The light niche

Rust was coming out around the pool light. It is an older style of niche that tends to leak through the light's mounting hole, so we recommended replacing the niche and switching to a smaller nicheless light.

The surface and equipment

The pool has a painted surface that is peeling at the step. It isn't leaking, but it will spread, and the pool will need refinishing in the near future. At the equipment, the heater had been powered down and read a wrong temperature when we turned it on, which points to a bad sensor or board. The water feature valve was also very hard to turn. The other issues are listed as optional items on the quote.
