Skimmer leak repair on Fort Myers Beach

A Fort Myers Beach pool had a leaking skimmer under a paver deck. When our repair crew took it out, they found out why: it had been forced into place when the pool was built.

Getting to the skimmer

The crew lowered the pool about 2,000 gallons to get the water below the skimmer, lifted the pavers around it and removed the old skimmer.

Why it was leaking

The pipe from the equipment comes straight up into the bottom of the skimmer, and it sits about a quarter inch off center. The original installer forced the skimmer over to line it up, which kept the joint under strain. Strain like that is a common reason a skimmer starts leaking.

Setting the new skimmer

Instead of forcing it again, the crew set the new skimmer slightly to one side so it lines up with the pipe with no tension, and so there is enough material around it to bond it to the pool. It won't affect how the skimmer works. They tested the lines afterward and found no leaks.

Resetting the pavers

A lot of sand had washed out from under the pavers in this area. The crew leveled the section they worked on and made it line up with the rest, but the deck past the work area is not level. We recommended a paver company to relevel it.

Refilling

The pool could be refilled right away. The crew left the pump running with the skimmer closed off while it filled.
