Skimmer leak detection in North Fort Myers

A pool and spa in North Fort Myers was losing water. Our leak detection found two leaks, a cracked skimmer and a leaking salt cell, plus a few other problems worth fixing.

Starting at the equipment

The pool was off when we arrived and the auto-fill was running, which hides how much water a pool is losing. We turned the equipment on and checked it first. The salt cell was leaking, either from a loose union or a crack at the bottom, which these cells are known for. It was also showing alarms for low salt and low flow, and the low salt reading could come from the leak itself.

Other equipment issues

The conduit going into the pump had exposed wires, which needs to be repaired for safety. The pool light worked, but the spa light was barely lit and needs to be replaced.

Plumbing and dye testing

The plumbing test found no leaks in the lines. The dye test found a crack running about halfway around the bottom of the skimmer rim. The skimmer needs to be replaced, so we applied epoxy as a temporary patch to slow the leak until the repair.

Sinking pavers

Several areas of the paver deck are sinking, including around the skimmer and one of the returns. That isn't a leak, but we noted it so the pavers can be reset when the skimmer is replaced.

What happens next

Because the crack is large, the pool will keep losing some water even with the epoxy. The repair quote covers replacing the skimmer and fixing the salt cell leak, with the pump wiring and spa light as added items. Epoxy is only a temporary fix; see why epoxy is not a permanent repair.
