Return line leak detection in Rotonda West

A Rotonda West pool had lost so much water that the pump was off when we arrived. The plumbing test showed the leak was in a return line, right where the fitting connects to the flex pipe.

Low water on arrival

The pump was off because the water level was too low to run it. Losing enough water to shut the pump down usually points to a leak, not evaporation.

Testing the plumbing

The return side failed the plumbing test. Our tech ran a camera into the 1 1/2 inch return line and found it leaking where the wall fitting connects to the flex pipe.

Warped flex pipe

About 4 feet back, the flex pipe was badly warped. Flex pipe is common on older Florida pools, and over time it can soften and deform underground, which is why we look past the first leak. The repair needs to replace the bad section, not just the joint. See how we repair underground pool plumbing.

Other things we checked

We found old epoxy in the corner of the steps and by the handrail. Neither was leaking at the time of our visit.
