Plumbing test first
The suction side and the return side of the plumbing both passed. That told us the water was escaping through the pool shell and its fittings, not underground.
The skimmer throat
The dye test pulled into the skimmer throat, where the skimmer meets the pool wall. It is one of the most common leak spots we find.
Four of five returns
Four of the five return fittings were leaking around the fitting, including all three bench jets. A return can be fine on the inside and still leak where it meets the plaster, which is exactly what dye testing shows.
Other notes
The pool light was not working when we arrived. The water was low enough that the pump would not prime, so we turned off the timer to protect the pump until the pool is refilled. The pool will keep losing water until these fittings and the skimmer throat are repaired.
