Checking the equipment first
The tech started at the equipment pad, because a leaking valve or pump is easy to mistake for a pool leak. Nothing there was leaking, but a few things needed attention. The electrical conduit going into the pump was missing its liquid-tight connector, which can cause an electrical problem. The valves were old and brittle, and one had a broken handle. The pool light was also not working.
Testing the plumbing
Next the tech tested the suction and return lines. The suction side passed. The return side failed, and the tech found the break in the return line under the paver deck, marked in the photo below.
Dye testing the pool
A full dye test of the pool shell, fittings and skimmer found no other leaks and no old epoxy patches. The tech did spot a crack starting to form in the skimmer body. It isn't leaking yet, but it is worth watching because it could become a leak later.
What happens next
The broken return line is the leak, and the pool will keep losing water until it is repaired. The repair quote lists that fix first, with the skimmer, the light and the pump wiring as optional items, since they are not leaking.
