Equipment and plumbing first
There were no issues at the equipment, and both the suction side and the return side of the plumbing passed their tests. That pointed to the pool shell.
Dye testing the crack
Swimming the pool, our tech found a horizontal crack about four feet long under the skimmer, running toward the light. Dye pulled into it, so it is leaking. See how we repair pool cracks.
A cracked skimmer body
The skimmer body is cracked too. It was not leaking yet, but we recommend replacing it before it starts. There was also what looked like expanding hydraulic cement in the skimmer throat.
Low water and the skimmer
The water was low enough that the skimmer was sucking air when we arrived, so we turned the skimmer off when we left to protect the pump. The pool will keep losing water until the crack is repaired.
